Onam is an yearly festival in the state of Kerala in India. It falls in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, which in Gregorian calendar overlaps with August–September. The festival commemorates the Vamana avatar of Vishnu, the subsequent homecoming of the legendary Emperor Mahabali and mythologies of Hinduism related to Kashyapa and Parashurama.

Onam is a major annual event for Malayali people in and outside Kerala. It is a harvest festival, one of three major annual Hindu celebrations along with Vishu and Thiruvathira, and it is observed with numerous festivities. Onam celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower arrangement), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thumbi Thullal (women's dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance), and other celebrations. It is the New Year day for Malayali Hindus.

1. Athirappilly Falls

It takes approx 60 - 90 minutes to reach Athirappilly Falls from Thrissur Thekkinkadu Maidan. Athirampally Falls is situated in Chalakudy Taluk, Thrissur District of Kerala, India which is near to the Chalakudy River, which originates from the upper reaches of the Western Ghats at the entrance to the Sholayar ranges. If you are on a one day trip to Athirampally Falls, you can also cover Vazhachal falls which is just a short drive from Athirampally and also Charpa Falls which is on the way from Athirampally to Vazhachal Falls.

2. Peechi Dam

It takes approx 30 - 40 minutes to reach Peechi Dam from Thrissur Thekkinkaadu Maithanam. Peechi Dam is situated 22 km outside Thrissur city in Kerala, India. The dam was started as an irrigation project for the surrounding villages in Thrissur. At the same time, it catered the drinking water needs of the population of Thrissur City. It serves as an irrigation dam, reaching out to the paddy fields in and around Thrissur city. Built across the Manali River, the dam is a vast catchment area of nearly 3,200 acres (1,300 ha) with extensive botanical gardens and cascading fountains offer numerous inviting avenues for tourists. One can see tuskers on the bank of Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1958 covering 125 square kilometres (48 sq mi).

3. Vazhani Dam

It takes approx 40 - 50 minutes to reach Vazhani Dam from Thrissur Thekkinkaadu Maithanam. Vazhani Dam is a clay dam built across the Wadakkancherry river near Wadakkancherry in Thrissur district of Kerala. The water is used for irrigation and drinking purposes. The dam has a four-acre garden and the construction was completed in 1962. Vazhani dam is built with mud and it is an earth dam like Banasura Sagar Dam. This place will be best  for kids and family.

4. Snehatheeram Beach

It takes approx 40 - 50 minutes to reach Snehatheeram from Thrissur Town. Snehatheeram Beach or Love Shore is beach in Thalikulam of Thrissur District in Kerala, India. It lies on the coast of Arabian Sea and attracts domestic tourists in every season. The beach was selected as the best beach tourism destination by the Department of Tourism Kerala during the year 2010. The beach is maintained by the Department of Tourism Kerala.

There is children's park located near to the beach with all facilities. The entry fee for park is Rs 10 for adult and Rs 5 for children, an aquarium with large collection of marine species, a well maintained garden and tiled walkway attract tourists to this beach. A restaurant named Naalukettu is also available for tourists for enjoying coastal Thrissur sea food.

5. Poomala Dam

Poomala Dam is an irrigation purpose dam and a tourist spot situated in Mulankunnathukavu Panchayath, which is approx 20 - 30 minute travel from Thrissur Town. The dam is situated 94.50 meters above mean sea level. The Dam provide boating in the reservoir, horse ride, a walkway of 600 metres, a community hall that can accommodate 300 persons, a cafeteria and latrine facilities.

6. Cheppara Caves

If you are planning for a trip to Poomala Dam, then you can also cover Cheppara Caves, which is near to the Dam. As the word ‘para’ means cheppara is a giant rock, covers an area of almost one kilometer. Here the wind blows strongly, fears that it may carry us in air. It is very nice to watch sun setting from Cheppara. The main attraction of Cheppara is its length, about 500 m.

7. Vilangankunnu


Vilangankunnu is a situated in 7 km away from Thrissur. This hillock has been converted by the Tourism Department as an amusement park. This is a beautiful hill which is a good picnic spot. The Children's Park on this beautiful hillside picnic spot offers amusement rides, where children can relax and play. While grown ups relish the scenic beauty of Thrissur town and kol wetlands of Thrissur from the hilltop. Many people came here to enjoy the beauty of sunset. The breeze of Vilangankunnu that pass through heart make us cool, and bring us to the world of natural beauty.


8. Chavakka Beach


Chavakkad Beach, lying on the coast of Arabian Sea and situated 5 km from Guruvayoor, one of the best beaches along the West coast with coconut bordered sea-shore is a pleasing view of rare natural beauty entice and attract thousands of tourists. Fringed shadow of coconut lagoons and the mesmerizing atmosphere make Chavakkad Beach a tourist spot throughout the year. Chavakkad Beach  is the place where the sea confluences with a river. This meeting of the sea with the river is known as Azhimokam in Kerela. The beaches at Chavakkad and Nattika are simply wonderful. The famous mural paintings are another fascination of the place.

9. Chimmony Dam


Chimmony Dam, 42km from Thrissur is located in Echippara village, Varantharappily town. Established in 1984, the sanctuary with an area of about 100 km² is on the Western slopes of the Nelliyampathi hills .This is the area of wild life sanctuary, makes for a wide variety of flora still. All major species of fauna of peninsular India are well represented in the sanctuary. and can find deer, elephants, wolves, etc. The sanctuary also offers trekking paths for the adventure traveller. However, due to years of human interference, the fauna is sparse. This project in Thrissur district envisages construction of a Dam at Echippara across Chimoni river, a tributary of Karuvannur river.

10. Thrissur Zoo


Thrissur Zoo or State Museum & Zoo, Thrissur (formerly the Trichur Zoo) is a 13.5-acre (5.5 ha) zoo that opened in 1885 in the heart of Thrissur City, Kerala, India. It is one of the oldest zoos in the country, and is home to the wide variety of animals, reptiles, and birds. The zoo compound includes a natural history museum and an art museum that showcase the socio-cultural heritage of the region. The Thrissur Zoo is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the Thrissur City center and is open from 10:00 AM till 5:15 PM, except Mondays. Still and video cameras are allowed in the park for a fee.
