At least nine people are feared to have died in Kerala from the Nipah virus, an infection which has high fatality rate and spreads mainly through bats, pigs and other animals, state health officials said.
“The situation is well under control. Officially, we have confirmed nine fever deaths from Kozhikkode and Malappuram. Of these, four cases have been confirmed to be Nipah-infected,” Kerala’s health minister KK Shailaja addressed.
Two of the deaths on Monday took place in the Kozhikode Medical College and two others died at the taluk hospital.
It's a highly fatal zoonotic disease, initially may be from pigs , bats then to other domestic animals .
Spread is through body fluids of the patient .
Contacts( Family, Health care workers) - Hand wash is the most important preventive measure. Use mask , gloves and goggles while serving patients. Don't eat or drink left over by patients.
Public- Hand wash with soap every time you eat , drink and before you face wash. Don't rub eyes before hand wash . Beware while using public toilets. Flush before and after use. Wash mug before and after use.
Drink only boiled/ sterilised fluids .Don't mix boiled water with water. Be highly cautious of road side food and drinks.
Avoid bitten and leftover fruits. Wash fruits and dates properly before eating.
Take prevention , don't panic to serve patients. Don't leave them unattended.

Symptoms are fever , running nose, throat pain and cough to start with and progress to unconsciousness , encephalitis, respiratory distress and cardiac failure due to myocarditis.It's a highly fatal zoonotic disease, initially may be from pigs , bats then to other domestic animals .
Spread is through body fluids of the patient .
